K-7 GRADES

ATTENTION 7TH GRADE STUDENTS

We miss you! We miss seeing your smiling faces and we miss your energy. So beginning Sunday, February 5th, Rabbi Neil will begin weekly classes for you.  Class will meet at 9:00 am, and will finish at 10:45. Included as part of your class time will be our weekly T’fillah for the K-3rd grade classes, during which you will be asked to help by partnering with Kindergarten students as “little T’fillah buddies”. You can call Bill at the Temple office if you have questions.

In our Religious School children learn to live their Judaism and parents are also invited to several Family Education Days. Our innovative curriculum grows in sophistication along with the children. Each week our young K-3rd grade Chaverim (friends), are given a special Jewish experience as they are introduced to Jewish customs, ceremonies and history. Classroom instruction is augmented by song, dance, arts and crafts, cooking, games, stories and a weekly learning service with the Rabbi.

Our 4th-6th grade Chalutzim (pioneers) begin to explore the history and culture of Judaism as well as Jewish values, through a more sophisticated eye. In the Fourth Grade the students begin to study Hebrew at a much higher level as they begin to prepare for Bar and Bat Mitzvah. They will explore Jewish life cycle, Israel, the Jewish community and will see the Torah more as an historical document than as a “story book”. Our sixth graders have the privilege of having both Rabbi Neil and Cantor Diane as their teachers!

A newly designed Chugim (clubs) program, which will include activity based electives such as Arts and Crafts, Jr. Choir, Creative Writing, Drama, Sports and other activities will begin each week, during the 10:30-11:30am hour for all K-6th graders. The students will select a first and second choice activity that they would like to participate in, and, once assigned, will continue for approximately 8-9 weeks at a time, with the option to re-select or stay in the same Chug during each trimester. These clubs will be activity based rather that curriculum based, and will allow the children to explore their Judaism through a medium that is special and important to them. The chug selection process will take place on September 18, and Chugim activities will begin on October 2. During the Chug time (10:30-11:30am) on September 11 and September 25, we will have special activities for all the children.

Call school office at (310) 453-3361 for more information.

MEET THE TEACHING STAFF

Jenni Alpert (Kindergarten)

Jenni Alpert has been a Judaica specialist and song-leader in the Jewish community for over 8 years, working with children of all ages. Offering experiences to explore, develop, and express Jewish identity, Jenni brings creative festivities and exciting educational programs to the table through

music, creative writing, art, storytelling, and theater.

Email her at jennialpertmusic1@yahoo.com.

Staci Concoff (Kindergarten)

Staci Concoff, younger daughter of our principal, Bill, brings a strong sense of Jewish pride to her interactions with children. She is a Speech Therapist for LAUSD in her “other life” but is a product of earlier years at Beth Shir Shalom. She spent the last several years at Temple Beth David in Temple City as an Israeli dance instructor and floating substitute for the Sunday school. Staci brings a fun dynamic to the classroom, having spent many years as a resident camp counselor and Unit head.  Email her at staci_concoff@yahoo.com.

Jenni and Staci will share the teaching of the Kindergarten, which will allow the children the special treat of experiencing both their talents and their unique and shining personalities. Both specialize in “informal” educational settings, which fits right into the Beth Shir Shalom philosophy.

Lisa Weinbaum (First Grade and Fourth Grade)

Throughout her life, Lisa Weinbaum has always wanted to teach, and has made this lifelong dream a reality.  As a little girl, Lisa was always playing “school” with her stuffed animals, or joining her mother in the religious school classroom at her hometown synagogue,  or instructing a class in gymnastics to young athletes her own age.  Lisa pursued her calling by attending the University of Georgia and graduating in the field of Elementary Education; and then spending the next six years in elementary school classrooms throughout Georgia and Miami.

Her two daughters, Alex and Sidney, have made it challenging for Lisa to return to the classroom.  However, for the past four years we’ve been the blessed recipients of her passion, wisdom and energy at Beth Shir Shalom.

Email her at lisaweinbaum@gmail.com

Aviv Meraro (Second Grade)

Aviv is originally from Israel and is passionate about teaching the history of Israel, its traditions, culture, sights, and the Hebrew language.   He hopes to bring people closer in heart to Israel. In addition to teaching at Beth Shir Shalom, Aviv works as an information technology consultant.  In his free time, Aviv enjoys spending time with his baby girl, watching and playing sports, and listening to music.

Email him at aviv@gmx.com

Josh Novegrod (Third and Fifth Grade)

Now entering his fifth year as a teacher at Shir Shalom, Josh believes that Judaism comes alive when it appeals to the senses – all the senses. As we sing, cook, draw, read, laugh and imagine, we will learn how Jewish values can help us grow as individuals and as a community.  Most importantly, Josh believes that the classroom should prepare students to bring the light of Torah home to family, where the most important community resides. Email Josh at

jnovegrod@yahoo.com

Jane Bernard (Dance Specialist)

Jane Bernard is a featured presenter and dance leader with the Los Angeles Bureau of Jewish Education and has taught dance in Los Angeles religious schools and nationwide for 20 years. Jane has also taught at many Jewish camps, on an Israeli Kibbutz, and has choreographed numerous shows and programs.

Now in her third year at Beth Shir Shalom, Jane has a unique view of bringing Israeli Dance to our community. "Israeli dance is a fun way for everyone to get together - and it doesn't matter if you have two left feet.  What’s important is that it is a group activity in which everyone can participate."

As a school community, we will be dancing the traditional "Oldies" plus the coolest new upbeat Israeli Dances.  Everyone will leave saying, “I can do that!”  I want to give our children confidence.   I want our kids to enjoy the spirit and rush of energy that you get from Israeli dance."   Email Jane at:
