B'NEY MITZVAH

BM Training Process

To become a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, a student must attend the Hebrew/Religious School in grades four through six, or demonstrate sufficient knowledge of Hebrew language and Judaica to the Rabbi.

Approximately eight months before the BM ceremony, students will begin their BM studies, meeting weekly with a tutor, reviewing the Friday Evening and Saturday morning prayers, for a period of 8 weeks.

Once that is complete, your child will study privately with Cantor Diane for six months, gaining confidence in leading a worship service, understanding the meaning of the prayers and developing a connection to them, as well as mastering the ancient chanting of the Torah and Haftarah readings.

In the final three months of training, individual meetings with Rabbi Comess-Daniels will focus on learning techniques of scriptural interpretation, in order to create a D'var Torah that will teach and inspire the community on the weekly Torah reading.

In addition to completing B'ney Mitzvah studies with an excellent grasp of skills, students come to understand the role that this event can play in the bigger issues of Jewish learning and continuity.
