HEBREW READING & PRAYER PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM
Shalom Religious School Parents and Students, This year we’re taking a more proactive stance on developing a stronger Hebrew Reading program within the Religious School, by inviting you to join an an exciting school-wide effort called the Hebrew Reading - Prayer Partnership Program (HR-PPP). Our goal is to first raise the Hebrew Reading skill set of every student at Beth Shir Shalom; to cultivate your child’s ability to read Hebrew fluently, so s/he can access the beauty and depth of our prayers. Then, we will invite students into joy of singing prayers within a praying community, while connecting their hearts to the sacred sounds that clothe our prayer texts. Through a partnership of teachers, parents, and students, we believe we can create the next generation of knowledgeable and educated Jews. We’ve designed a Hebrew Reading & Prayer Curriculum for each class in the school, in which reading skills will be introduced by the classroom teacher, and homework excercies will reinforce the work done in class, through our parents' involvement. Ideally, parents and children should spend at least 10 minutes nightly reviewing the homework, after which parents are expected to initial their child’s progress report page. In this way, teachers can monitor your child’s progress and ensure the class as a whole is meeting its goals. What can parents do to support their child’s work at home? Several suggestions include: Have your child read or sing to you, and share positive comments which build their self respect and morale. Be genuinely interested in your child’s work, as your interest will make your child want to do their best work. Team up with your child in their reading exercises, and share the joy of learning together. This website contains Hebrew reading exercises and recordings of sacred melodies to help you develop your skills in reading and chanting the prayers(see below). In addition, a timetable is included to guide you in knowing your homework assignment each week. All you'll need is a computer, and a desire to make it happen. Over the course of the school year, you’ll discover that mastering the liturgy will become easier, and in the process, you’ll have created wonderful memories together. With our children’s Hebrew reading skill set at a high level, and their spiritual connection to our congregation in prayer deepened, we will bear witness to an empowered generation, fully and joyously participating in Jewish life. We value being joined on a spiritual journey; it is who we at our core as a community.
